Team DSM 2023

This page is about the professional Team DSM 2023 men.
The Dutch team is one of the 18 teams racing in the 2023 UCI World Tour which includes the three Grand Tours.

Over time I will add links to each rider and their respective bike. Consider this page as a hub in constant update mode through the racing season as I gather small details about the DSM riders and their bikes.

Team DSM 2023 is composed of 30 riders. Nine new riders are joining the team to replace the nine men leaving at the end of the 2012 season.
Also, four new coaches are joining the team replacing three leaving coaches.
Team DSM ended the 2022 season ranking 20th in the UCI World Tour.

As a WorldTour team, Team DSM is racing the complete 2023 UCI World Tour calendar including the Milan-San Remo, Tour de France, Giro D’Italia, La Vuelta a Espana, Paris-Roubaix, Tirreno-Adriatico, Amstel Gold Race, Liege-Bastogne-Liege, Paris-Nice, Tour des Flandres, Criterium du Dauphine, etc…

DSM Team starts its racing season on the Santos Tour Down Under 2023, in South Australia. DSM has four Australian riders and one New Zealander on its roster list.
It is a great opportunity for the DSM team’s local riders to shine on their roads.

The DSM Team roster is composed of a good balance of experienced General Classification type of riders, like Romain Bardet and Chris Hamilton, and classic type of riders like John Degenkolb, and Harm Vanhoucke, Team DSM focuses mainly on Grand Tour racing and the spring classics including the Paris-Roubaix.

The Team’s Road Bikes

The Team DSM is racing on the Scott Foil RC 2023 model and Scott Plasma. The team raced with the Scott Foil RC 2023 throughout the Tour de France 2022 which indicates it might be the main bike for the whole racing season.
Increasingly, teams rely on only one “Do-it-all” race bike. The advanced technology of manufacturing allows to design and manufacture of lightweight aerodynamic bikes that fit sprinters and climbers universally.

This has the advantage of simplifying the logistics of the team since all of its riders have the same bike model.

For the 2023’s season Team DSM keeps a similar setup to the 2022 season.

The Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 12-speed groupset equips the bikes. Since the 2022’s season, all the bikes on the World Tour are disc brakes type.
The Shimano wheels are rolling on Vittoria Tubeless and tubulars tires depending on the race’s profile.
The rider’s three contact points with the bike are the Syncros Tofino, Savona, and Belcarra saddle, Syncros stem/handlebar combo, and Shimano Dura-Ace pedals.

The Team DSM uses Shimano’s Bikefitting.com to fit its team rider with their bikes.
Since Shimano is an official supplier of Team DSM, the Shimano name on the chain stays confirms the Japanese Company’s sponsor status.

The Dura-Ace groupset is not tuned with any ceramic bearings. Shimano insists on using its groupset as designed, meaning using steel ball bearings, and Shimano chain lubricated with Weldite grease.

Wahoo Elemnt provides GPS head units cycling computers, and Shimano the integrated Power Meter.

High technology Team Jersey

The riders of Team DSM wear Scott‘s Cadence, Centric, and Split helmets, Nalini Team cycling jersey and bib shorts, Driive sunglasses, and Shimano S-Phure cycling shoes.

I like Team DSM’s collaboration with Nalini to develop protective cycling jerseys and bib shorts.
It might take some time before this trickle down to “normal riders” but, I hope this gets retailed sometime.
By the way, Exte Ondo which sponsors Team Euskaltel has had something similar for a few years already.

The Team DSM uses Nalini Jersey and bib shorts made with Dyneema fibers.
DSM R&D Piet Rooijakkers challenged Nalini to develop team wear featuring protective fabrics.
The idea is to minimize the risk of injuries and energy consumption to recover during Grand Tours.
Dyneema is 15 times stronger than steel at the same weight ratio.
To quantify how the Dyneema material is exceptionally strong; the riders wearing the DSM Nalini Dyneema jersey are fully protected up to 45 km/h.
While the Dyneema panels might be a bit abrased after a crash, depending on the impact the skin might still be a bit scratched, but this provides a reduction in wounds.
Unfortunately, the Nalini Dyneema cycling jersey is not available for retail yet.

This is part of the marginal gain strategies the professional cycling team uses to optimize their racing.
