Paris-Roubaix 2022 Teams and Bikes

This is my mini guide to Paris-Roubaix 2022 Teams and Bikes.

But first, allow me to introduce briefly the “Hell of the North” just in case you need it.

Paris-Roubaix is on April 17th, 2022. The 257.5km race starts from Compiegne and finishes on the Velodrome of Roubaix (France).

The “Hell of the North” as it is lovely nicknamed, is one of the five monuments, and it is one of the most brutal one-day races with its paves section.

Paris-Roubaix Course

The cobblestones section starts at the 100km mark.

From there until Roubaix there are 30 cobblestones sections totaling 54.8km.

Each cobbles section is graded for its toughness. Five stars are the most difficult on the grading scale.

The most difficult sections are:

  • Sector 4: Carrefour de l’Arbre, ★★★★★, 2,100m.
  • Sector 5: Camphin-en-Pévèle, ★★★★, 1,800m.
  • Sector 7: Cysoing > Bourghelles, ★★★★, 1,300m.
  • Sector N.11: Mons-en-Pévèle, ★★★★★, 3,000m.
  • Sector 12: Auchy-lez-Orchies > Bersée, ★★★★, 2,600m.
  • Sector 15: Tilloy-lez-Marchiennes > Sars-et-Rosières, ★★★★, 2,400m.
  • Sector 17: Hornaing > Wandignies-Hamage, ★★★★, 3,700m.
  • Sector 19: Trouée d’Arenberg, ★★★★★, 2,300m (This is the most iconic section).
  • Sector 20: Haveluy > Wallers, ★★★★, 2,500m.
  • Sector 26: Quiévy > Saint-Python, ★★★★, 3,700m.

For the second year in a row, there is also a women’s edition called Paris-Roubaix femmes held on Saturday, April 16th.

The 24 women’s teams are racing a shorter version with 116km including 17 cobbles sectors of 29.2km in total.

Also on Saturday is the Paris-Roubaix Challenge, which is the amateur version. I added it to my “Cycling To-Do” list.

Paris-Roubaix Specific Setups

Some teams use dedicated bikes models, and some others their road bike versions tuned specifically for Paris-Roubaix.

Teams mechanics use as many tricks to ensure riders go through the hell as “smoothly” as possible.

Most seen setups are wider tire sections, between 27 and 32 depending on teams.

Either tubular or tubeless pumped in very low pressure (55~80 P.S.I.) and filled with a lot of puncture-proof sealants.

When I say a lot, I mean up to two bottles into one wheel while one bottle is designed to fill two wheels. That’s a lot.

Team DSM bikes are equipped with hubs that allow adjusting tire pressure on the fly.

Double layers of bar tapes are a classic setup seen on Paris-Roubaix. Many riders protect themselves by taping all parts of the body that are in contact with the bike.

Fingers, palms, and bottoms in some cases are taped to protect the skin. For an example on how it looks see how Groupama-FDJ does it here.

Some riders also adjust their handlebar angle slightly up. Raising the brake hoods for a more relaxed wrist position.

Paris-Roubaix 2022 Teams and Bikes

25 teams are starting the 119th edition of Paris-Roubaix. 18 teams are the World Tour teams and the 7 are Continental Pro teams.
