The 2020 Giro d’Italia edition start has been delayed and is held from October 3rd till 25th included. The mountain stages in the 3rd week might have snow at this time of the year.
I think the Giro d’Italia is usually harder and the most spectacular of the 3 Grand Tours. Most of the stages are designed to initiate riders action and this year race keeps up with Giro’s Spirit.

In a nutshell the 2020 Giro d’Italia is 3497.9km total length, raced over 21 days by 22 Teams of 8 riders (In case you are like me and needs a calculator this equals to 176 riders). The race features 3 Time Trial stages (Stages 1, 14, 21), 5 flat stages with potential Sprint finish, 7 hilly stages and the remaining 6 stages are the mountains stages including three brutal ones as the stages 17, 18 and 20.
Writing in depth about each stage of the races is exciting but I have to dedicated my valuable time to my main topic, which is the rider’s bike. The Giro official homepage has the detailed stages as linked here: https://www.giroditalia.it/en/the-route/
The last week week of the Giro is tough and it is interesting to observe each team strategies in the selection of riders. Each team is starting the Giro (or any race for that matter) with a plan. Looking the riders selection does usually reflect the Directeur Sportif’s strategy to hit the team broad goal.
Some teams are chasing stage win, some are racing for a specific jersey classification, the ultimate one being the Maglia Rosa. It might feels counter intuitive but not all riders are racing to win the Giro or a stage.
About 60% to 70% of the peloton is racing to support its team leader when there is a clearly defined able leader. Some teams are grateful enough to be able to participate and will do its best to “show the jersey” by tempting a courageous escape for a long period of any given stage. This has the advantage of having the team jersey and name being seeing and named on worldwide medias.
All of the 176 professional riders have their own unique skills and talents. It is also 176 bikes set up reflecting their owner, wether he is a climber, a sprinter, a Gregorio or an all rounder. I respect and admire each riders participating any pro race.
15 teams are racing on Shimano, 4 on Campagnolo and 3 on SRAM groupset. 17 Teams are on Disc brakes type.
